William Appleton (150) was a Yeoman Warder at the Tower from 20 April 1902 to his death 9 October 1908

Born: 1856 abt. Sonning, Reading, he was already a member of the Royal Berkshire Militaria when he enlisted into the Army on the 7 June 1875, joining the Royal Engineers Army Number 13001.  He saw action in Egypt and South Africa.  On discharge 8 June 1896 he had reached the rank of Troop Sergeant Major, in the Royal Engineers, Telegraph Battalion.

On discharge he had the following medals:

  1. South Africa Medal 1877-1879 clasp
  2. Egypt Medal 1882-1889 clasp
    1. Tel-el-Kebirand
    2. The Nile, he was part of the Nile expedition to releave General Gordon, then under siege at Khartoum
  3. Khedive’s Bronze Star 1882
  4. Long Service & Good Conduct 1893 (LS&GC)

 

He had other jobs but became a Yeoman Warder  on the 20 April 1902, replacing John Leblique (119) to his death 9 October 1908 (aged 53) when he was replaced by Yeoman Warder Alexander Smoker (161)some 6 years a Yeoman Warder.

He did not immediately move into the Tower on getting the position he move in around 1906, he died 9th October 1908, (aged 53) he lived at No 7 Tower Green.
