Yeoman Warder (YW) James John Tuck (145) was a Yeoman Warder here at the Tower of London from 12 May 1898 replacing Stephen Sweeney (81) to his death 1 February 1909, when he was replaced by William O’Donoughue (162).
James was born Abt 1854 and enlisted on the 8 September 1872 into the Rifle Brigade, his army No. 7983. He was discharged 21 May 1891 at Aldershot, and had rechecked the rank of Sergeant Major (W0I) – in the 4th Battalion Rifle Brigade.
He served as a YW from the 12 May 1898 (aged 44 3/12) until his death on the 1 February 1909 at Guys Hospital (although he probably died in the Tower), having served 10 years 8 months.
He had the following medals:

- Afganistan Medal 1878-80 clasp
- Ali Musjid
- The Long Service & Good Conduct Medal (LS&GC)
- 1902 Coronation Medal
James and his wife Elizabeth Jane (nee?) had four children
- James Robert Walter b 25 Oct 1894 Aldershot
- Dorothy Julia Alice b 4 Nov 1895 Aldershot
- May b 1900
- Reginald Ernest b 1904 Tower of London, and died 1987 in Sydney Australia
He did not live in the Tower until just before his death, and is shown living at 33 Mint St

James Tuck was my great grandfather, I was so pleased to see this site online. According to my mother James was married at the Tower and lived for a time at Wharfinger Cottage. If you have any further information on his life and duties as a Warder I would love to know.
